Building the Future of Agriculture Through Generosity and Vision

Raised in Oakdale, California, Jay Gilbert grew up surrounded by agriculture and strong values that shaped his life’s path. He arrived at Chico State at a time when both the University and the town were much smaller, yet rich with opportunity and connection—qualities that still define them today. Gilbert saw Chico State as a place where learning extended beyond textbooks, offering students the chance to lead, collaborate, and gain experience in a wide range of endeavors.

As a student, he competed with the men’s track team, joined Delta Sigma Pi fraternity, and formed lasting relationships with faculty and classmates who took a personal interest in student success. Those experiences deepened his appreciation for hands-on learning and the power of mentorship.

After earning his degree in business administration in 1969, Gilbert carried forward the values that have shaped his life and career: integrity, dedication, and respect for others. These principles supported a distinguished career in California agribusiness. He serves as vice president of A.L. Gilbert Company, a family business founded in 1892, and as the owner and general manager of Farmers Warehouse Company, which manufactures and distributes feed throughout the western United States and Pacific Rim. He also owns Lockwood Seed and Grain, leads Oakdale Feed & Seed as president, and has served as director of Oak Valley Community Bank since 1991. For more than three decades, Gilbert has been an almond grower, maintaining a deep connection to the land and the agricultural community he supports. His son, Brett (Business Administration, ’99), followed in his footsteps as a Chico State graduate and launched a successful career in sales that began on campus.

Gilbert’s commitment to Chico State reflects a lifelong belief in education, opportunity, and community. As a member of the University Foundation Board of Governors and a supporter of the College of Agriculture, Athletics, and the Heritage Circle and Tower Society, he continues to help the University provide meaningful experiences for future generations.

The Jay Gilbert Farm Store stands as a tribute to his enduring commitment to student success, innovation, and the future of agriculture. Through this legacy, his name will continue to inspire generations of Wildcats to pursue opportunity, lead with purpose, and shape the communities they serve.
