The Casillas Legacy of Learning and Leadership

From his earliest days at Chico State, Stuart Casillas understood that success is built on small details. Clear communication, keeping promises, and leading with integrity have guided his life and career.

Those lessons began early and deepened on our campus, where he found both direction and mentorship. While earning his bachelor’s degree in economics, Casillas immersed himself in campus life, working as an assistant in the Economics Department and contributing to research projects with Professor Emerita Frederica Shockley. In his senior year, he worked with then-Provost Scott McNall in Academic Affairs, cutting his teeth in a more formal office setting. Through these experiences, he learned how organizations thrive when everyone contributes with purpose and care.

These opportunities, along with the challenge of balancing academics, work, and community, shaped both his professional path and his character. During this time, he met his wife, Kimi (Business Administration, ’96), who shared his determination, curiosity, and love of learning. Together, they built a partnership grounded in shared values and a lasting connection to Chico State.

After earning his bachelor’s degree, Casillas completed his Juris Doctor at The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law. He went on to become a corporate partner at Kirkland & Ellis LLP, where he represents many of the nation’s leading private equity firms. Known for his integrity and leadership, he was recognized by MergerLinks as one of the “Top Technology Lawyers in North America.”

Throughout his accomplished career, Casillas has remained deeply connected to the University that helped shape him. Together, he and Kimi have maintained their dedication to Chico State through their generous support across campus, including Wildcat soccer, Recreational Sports, the Economics Department, and numerous student-focused initiatives. Their philanthropy reflects their belief in the power of education to transform lives and communities.

Casillas has shared his time, insight, and leadership to help Chico State grow and thrive. As an emeritus member of the University Foundation Board of Governors, and through his past service as a board member and chair of the Development and Advocacy Committee, he has guided the University with expert care.

With the naming of the Casillas Family Auditorium, their commitment will inspire others to support the next generation of Wildcats and to uphold the spirit of excellence and community that defines Chico State.
